The Consultant shall perform the following tasks:

• monitoring of the storage and archive performance, investigation into H/W and S/W
  problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions;
  
• ensuring that in case of H/W or S/W failures the operational configuration can be
  restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backup/archive
  procedures;
  
• liaison with the external providers of H/W and S/W maintenance for the request and
  follow up of maintenance interventions;
  
• administration of Oracle databases, tuning of database configuration parameters to
  optimize database performance, monitoring and growth;
  
• analysis, planning and performance of H/W and S/W upgrades or reconfigurations, taking
  care of compatibility issues between storage subsystems;
  
• implementation and maintenance of scripts and/or procedures where applicable for the
  automated and/or controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of
  technical documentation
  
• provision of stand-by/on-call support;
  
• provision of support, as required, to critical operations.
  

In the performance of the activities the Consultant shall apply the relevant change control and
maintenance procedures.

In addition to having a university degree (or equivalent), the Consultant shall have minimum of
6 years experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed storage systems. The
experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized
by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server
side, and by high availability requirements.

The Consultant shall have an expert knowledge and an extensive work experience in the UNIX
operating system, Storage Area Networks (SAN), backup/archive technologies and should have
experience, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as
possible of the following system and software environments:

• Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) systems (SAM-FS)
  
• High end, automated, tape library systems (StorageTek SL8500 series with ACSLS
  software)
  
• SAN topologies, managing Brocade (or equivalent) switches, and storage provision via
  EMC Clariion serving many different types of storage client platforms
  
• SAN Capacity Planning
  
• SAN management software concepts and practical experience
  
• Implementation of backup and recovery solutions under Symantec NetBackup or equivalent
  
• Sun/Solaris 10 operating system
  
• High available environment under SUN Cluster
  

Experience in the administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be
considered as an advantage:

• Perl and PHP scripting
  
• VTL and Data De-duplication technologies
  
• System/Service Monitoring using Nagios framework
  
• Linux Operating System
  
• Setting up and maintaining security systems, on host, network and storage level (e.g.
  firewalls, SSL, encryption); SAN Fabric security
  
• Oracle database administration on highly available, cluster environments (Oracle 11)
  
• Oracle PL/SQL
  
• TOAD Data modeller
  

The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of
autonomy and good analytical skills. The Consultant shall be able to conduct all activities in
an orderly and disciplined manner, shall be able to work calmly and correctly under stress
and must be able to work with the minimum of supervision.

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for
the position is English and therefore the consultant must be able to work effectively in this
language and have knowledge of the other.
