The tasks of the Consultant as a member of the Data Services team will typically include:

• Provision of support to the daily monitoring of the Data Centre and reporting
  operational anomalies in the routine operational meetings.
  
• Provision of support to the analysis of Data Centre anomalies.
  
• Provision of support to the testing and test automation of the Data Centre software
  releases.
  
• Preparation and maintenance of Data Centre operational procedures.
  
• Provision of support to the user service helpdesk on User queries to the Data Centre.
  
• Provision of support in creating reports on Data Centre statistics.
  
• Provision of support to enhance the visualisation and presentation of Archive data in
  response to user requests and to facilitate access to the multi-format Data Centre
  products.
  
• Provision of support to proto-typing concepts for evolving the Data Centre to support
  current and future EUMETSAT programmes.
  

In addition to having a University degree in a Computer studies or other relevant discipline,
the Consultant shall have the following mandatory skills and experience:

• Minimum 2 years experience in a supporting software engineering role in an
  operational environment
  
• Demonstrable experience of working with Earth Observation data (Data visualisation,
  data processing)
  
• Experience in Unix / Linux environment and Shell Scripting
  
• Web development experience
  
• Testing methods including software testing tools
  
• Knowledge of data formats used for Geospatial data – preferably netCDF and HDF
  

Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the Consultant to have experience with
some of the following:

• Image processing experience
  
• Knowledge of Image Processing systems (preferably McIDAS and/or Unidata IDV)
  
• Graphical data formats (e.g. KML, GEOTIFF)
  
• Java / JavaScript
  
• XML / XSLT
  
• Perl and/or Python.
  
• Geo-spatial and interoperability standards
  

The Consultant needs to maintain a customer focus in all his activities which he is to conduct
in a traceable and disciplined manner. He/She must be able to work to deadlines with a
minimum of supervision, remain calm when under stress, be a good team player and have
good communication skills.

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for
the position is English and therefore the consultant must be able to work effectively in this
language and have a knowledge of the other.
