Flight Dynamics Engineering Support  (ab 01.04.2010)

Since 1989 BITWORKS offers IT consultancy, software development and system/network support to international customers from industry, authorities and organisations.

To complete the existing Mission and System Engineering Team at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, we are looking for a well experienced full-time Flight Dynamics Engineering Support.

 Der Kontext

The Consultant will be part of the Mission and System Engineering team within the SES
Division and at the same time he/she will also be integrated as technical expert (in a support
role) in specific programme development project teams (matrix organization). He/she shall
work in close cooperation with other team members within the SES Division as well as
across the EUMETSAT organization.

 Ihre Aufgaben

The consultant is intended to be assigned to support Earth Observation GEO and/or LEO
satellites/programmes, although other tasks outside these programmes cannot be excluded. In
the frame of these programmes, the detailed tasks will include as a minimum:

  • analysis and review of any relevant documentation to identify issues that may affect the
    Space and/or Ground Segment Design and/or Operations with respect to Flight Dynamics
    System implementation and operations
  • definition, development and implementation of flight dynamics tools for mission a
  • support mission analysis including the production of technical notes
  • support to the definition of requirement specifications in liaison with operational users in
    relation to flight dynamics systems and operations
  • study, definition, prototyping and assessment of flight dynamics related algorithms and
    processing techniques and possible implementations, including the preparation of related
    technical notes as necessary and required
  • contribute to the definition of the ground segment data flows/interfaces between the flight
    dynamics and the rest of the ground segment and/or satellites from a system engineering
    point of view
  • support to the procurement of future flight dynamics systems as required and follow-up of
    these activities as directed by EUMETSAT
  • definition and implementation of Flight Dynamics test tools
  • support as necessary the AIV (Assembly, Integration, Verification) related activities
    (integration, test procedure generation, requirements/interfaces verification and
    validation, including follow-up of identified technical issues/non-conformances and final
    acceptance as well as fine tuning of flight dynamics systems prior to their operational use)

The specific tasks assigned to the Consultant will be agreed through dedicated work-packages
with clear identification of activities and outputs expected.

In the performance of these tasks, the consultant shall apply the relevant organisational and
programmatic quality management procedures as well as the relevant Flight Dynamics
engineering standards and working practices.

 Ihr Profil

The Consultant shall have a university degree in mathematics, physics or relevant
engineering discipline, with a specialization that includes orbital mechanics and/or dynamics
and control. In addition, he/she shall demonstrate the experience and capability to fulfil the
assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision.

He/she shall have, as a pre-requisite, a demonstrated experience in the field of Flight
Dynamics of at least 5 years, preferably gained during the development and operation of
space systems. In particular, the Consultant shall demonstrate as a minimum:

  • thorough understanding of orbital mechanics
  • knowledge of Flight Dynamics Systems used to operate LEO or GEO satellites
  • practical experience in the specification, development, procurement and/or AIV
    related activities of Flight Dynamics systems
  • ability to perform Mission Analysis activities
  • sound knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems as well as programming languages
    (FORTRAN as a minimum)
  • a high degree of customer focus and service orientation
  • good communication skills and team spirit, with proven ability to work within teams
    and between teams
  • effective oral and written use of English as English is the working language of this
    position

In addition, the following knowledge shall be considered as an asset:

  • familiarity with relevant engineering standards (e.g. CCSDS, ECSS)
  • thorough understanding of the Attitude Control satellite subsystem which includes the
    attitude sensors, control algorithms and actuators, and allows the control of the
    satellite’s orbit and attitude during all phases of its mission
  • demonstrated operational experience in the orbital and attitude control of LEO or
    GEO satellites
  • knowledge of orbit determination, navigation and filtering techniques, including
    GNSS and image data (star/landmarks) processing
  • knowledge of NAPEOS (ESOC Navigation Package for Earth Observing Satellites)
