Support for System & Ground Segment Engineering in Support of Future Programmes  (ab 01.01.2010)

Since 1989 BITWORKS offers IT consultancy, software development and system/network support to international customers from industry, authorities and organisations.

To complete the existing Multi-Disciplinary System Engineering Team at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, we are looking for a well experienced full-time Support for System & Ground Segment Engineering in Support of Future Programmes.

 Der Kontext

The consultant will be part of the Ground Segment Engineering Group of the SES Division,
working in close co-ordination with the post-EPS team. The tasks assigned to the Consultant
will be agreed through dedicated work-packages with clear identification of activities and
outputs expected. The consultant, as a minimum, shall accomplish the tasks identified
hereafter.

 Ihre Aufgaben

The consultant will support the activities related to phase 0/A of post-EPS in the areas of
system and ground segment engineering:

  • Support the analysis of the requirements of space-ground communication, derivation of
    relevant interface requirements applicable to the communication subsystems of the space
    and ground segments, taking into account feasibility issues and any relevant cooperation
    with partners.
  • Support the generation of a functional decomposition of the system and allocation of
    system requirements.
  • Support the performance of trade-offs and identification of solutions for the subsystems
    dedicated to:
    - data acquisition
    - data dissemination
    - data processing
    - data archiving and retrieval
    - system monitoring and control.
  • - Support the definition of the System Architecture addressing the overall design of the
    selected system configuration and its physical elements.
  • - Production of an Architecture Concept Document.
  • Drafting the Ground Segment Requirements Document for the selected payload and
    system configuration. Identification of areas that need to be analysed in support of the
    definition of ground segment requirements; organisation and undertaking of the analysis.
  • Support the definition of the scope of relevant studies, support their procurement and
    performance.
  • Support the preparation of phase reviews.

In the performance of these tasks, the consultant shall apply the relevant organisational and
programmatic quality management procedures as well as the relevant ground stations system
engineering standards.

 Ihr Profil

The Consultant shall be capable of supporting the post-EPS related activities with a minimum
of supervision and guidance. The Consultant shall have a university degree (or equivalent)
together with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in the following areas and
disciplines:

  • Extensive experience in the specification, design, implementation, integration,
    verification and validation of large and complex Earth Observation related ground
    segments;
  • System Engineering practices and experience on the implementation of the full lifecycle
    of requirements engineering of a Space System (Spacecraft, Ground Segment, System).

In addition, the knowledge and experience of the following processes is considered as an
asset:

  • Knowledge of ECSS Standards;
  • Knowledge of industry “best practices” in the field of Space Systems engineering.

Knowledge of Ground Systems for Earth Observation Satellites e.g. MSG, MTG or METOP
would be an advantage.

The Consultant shall be in possession of sound management and interpersonal skills to
conduct the responsibilities described above autonomously and with a minimum level of
supervision yet within a good team spirit, exhibiting good oral and written communications
skills, analytical capabilities, and motivation.

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for
the position is English and therefore the consultant must be able to work effectively in this
language and have knowledge of the other.
