Support on Algorithm Development for EUMETSAT Meteorological & Climate Monitoring Products  (ab 01.01.2010)
BIT-01-236

Since 1989 BITWORKS offers IT consultancy, software development and system/network support to international customers from industry, authorities and organisations.

To complete the existing MTG Mission Team (MMT) at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, we are looking for a well experienced full-time Support on Algorithm Development for EUMETSAT Meteorological & Climate Monitoring Products.

Eintrittstermin ist der 01.01.2010

 Der Kontext

One of the objectives of the consultancy is to support EUMETSAT in the realisation of the
SCOPE-CM pilot projects with a particular emphasis on the generation of a global surface
albedo data set from archived geostationary observations (SCOPE-CM pilot project 3). This
project aims at generating three years of level 3 product based on surface albedo derived from
Meteosat-7, Meteosat-5 and GMS-5 observations. Meteosat data have already been generated
at EUMETSAT and GMS-5 data are currently being processed at the Japanese
Meteorological Agency (JMA).

 Ihre Aufgaben

Algorithms for Climate Monitoring

  • The tasks of the Consultant on scientific algorithm development will typically include:
Task CM.1 Analysis the radiometric consistency between the radiances of Meteosat-7,
    Meteosat-5 and GMS-5.
Task CM.2 Analysis the temporal and spatial consistency between the surface albedo
level 2 products derived from Meteosat-7, Meteosat-5 and GMS-5 over the
common areas between pair of adjacent satellites.
Task CM.3 Sensitivity analysis in support to the preparation of the ATBD for the
generation of the Level 3 product.
Task CM.4 Designing and prototyping of the algorithm described in the ATBDs.
Task CM.5 Verification of the algorithm functionality including the preparation of
    validation data sets.
Task CM.6 Applying the prototype version of the algorithm on three years of data.
Task CM.7 Evaluation of this global product through among other a comparison with
similar products derived by other space agencies.
Task CM.8 Preparing a validation report with the results of the radiance and a level 2
product consistency analyses and the evaluation of the global product.

MTG Imager Products Prototypes

  • Task FCI.1 Maintain and further expand the MSG-SEVIRI long-term database (MSG
data and other ancillary data needed for the Level 2 processors).
  • Task FCI.2 Support the FCI team in the preparation of proxy data based on foreign
    satellite data (notably MODIS).
  • Task FCI.3 Support the FCI team in the preparation of necessary scripts.
  • Task FCI.4 Prepare / maintain diagnostic tools to analyse the performance of prototype
    code.
  • Task FCI.5 Support the preparation of technical documentation describing the
    prototypes.
  • Task FCI.6 Serve as a general point of contact for the FCI product team on software
related issues (e.g. compiler options, code libraries etc.).

Algorithms for Sounding Products

  • The tasks of the Consultant in support of the development of the MTG-IRS L2 prototype
    processor will typically include:
Task IRS.1 Maintain the end-to-end L2 prototype environment (code+application data)
    using standard revision control utilities.
Task IRS.2 Implement modifications using standard programming language.
Task IRS.3 Prepare scripts to run the L2 prototype code on proxy data.
Task IRS.4 Prepare/maintain diagnostic tools to analyse performance/efficiency of the
    L2 prototype processor.
Task IRS.5 Support integration of modules delivered by external studies into the L2
    prototype environment.
Task IRS.6 Support the preparation of technical documentation of the L2 prototype.
